(SAN JOSE, Jan. 22nd, 2013) – The First Ever Northern California Fashion Law Panel, co-produced by Ebitu Law Group, P.C. (ELG) and UC Hastings College of the Law Communications and Entertainment Law Journal (Hastings), debuted with a resounding success.
Held on January 17th, 2013, at the law school campus in San Francisco, the event began with ELG Attorney Uduak Oduok, a Hastings Alumni, serving as moderator. Oduok introduced the panelists: Mariessa Terrell, an attorney at SBC Law Group and former trademark attorney for the US Patent and Trademark Office, Staci Riordan, a Partner and Chair for the Fashion Law Practice Group at Fox Rothschild, LLP and Bryan Scheyer, Fashion designer of the leading San Francisco brand, gr.dano.
Shortly after, an entertaining, indepth and engaging discussion ensued where the panelists defined fashion law, provided an overview of the fashion industry and practical real issues fashion professionals face, explained how attorneys and law students could get into fashion law, provided examples of the kinds of legal issues fashion law attorneys are called upon to tackle, and addressed the role of social media and women in fashion law.
“I was thrilled with the turnout and the fact that the audience stayed through the whole event,” said Oduok. “Fashion Law is here to stay and I am humbled that ELG could join forces with Hastings to make history in Northern California and in fashion law history books.”
“The first Northern California Fashion Law panel was a fantastic opportunity to showcase UC Hastings’ multidimensional approach to the law,” said Matt Tonner, Editor-in-Chief of the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal. “The panel brought leading practitioners together with designers, giving aspiring fashion lawyers a thorough introduction to the problems they’ll encounter representing clients in the apparel industry. Having attended many panels during my time at Hastings, I can say without reservation that this was not only one of the most interesting, but also the best dressed.”
“More than 75 law students, faculty, staff, practitioners, and creative professionals attended the event to learn about the nexus between law and the business of fashion,” said Danielle Ayalon, a 3rd year Law Student and also an executive with the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal. “Panelists came from across the country to discuss what fashion law is and where lawyers are needed in the industry.”
“It was exciting to see the huge turnout of attendees at the event and the significant amount of interest expressed in California’s first Fashion Law Society,” said Ashley Weiss, a second year law student and founder of the newly established UC Hastings Fashion Law Society (FLS).
Both Hastings and Oduok, who is also the newly appointed FLS alumni advisor, are hoping to leverage the high interest in fashion law in Northern California throughout the year.
